Blagojevich- Campaign promise "Puffery"

Mon Jan 30, 2006 at 07:19:11 AM PDT

Well, I guess we can look at it that Gov. Rod Blagojevich actually said something honest. A lawsuit was filed by some fired prison employees saying that Blago had broken his campaign promise not to fire necessary state employees who were doing their job well. In court, attorney's for the state said the the pledge was "classic political puffery". It worked. Case dismissed.

Now, I'm not saying the case should have suceeded.  I don't believe that campaign promises are legally binding. However, I am distressed by the "classic political puffery" line.

What other pledges of Blago were "Puffery"? His pledge to clean up the corruption in the state government? Apparently yes. Way to stand by your word, Rod.

The Republicans are going to have a field day with this, and rightly so. It just gets harder and harder for me to picture myself voting for this guy in the fall.
